NIPA Bude, 5 Bird Mallow Etc: Excellent racing in all organisations.

Arthur McKinstry of McKinstry Bros Dromara holding 1st Open NIPA Mallow 5 Bird, also pictured is Arthurs only grandchild 11 year old Rebecca.
The provisional Bude Open winner was as shy as John Donnelly of Donnelly Brothers after six photos late on Sunday night it still refused to face the camera. Donnelly Bros also finished 3rd Open Mallow and 11th Open INFC Yearling National on Thursday. What a week for this loft!

Ron McKelvey of Newry & District finished 3rd Open in the race last year, this year he went one better finishing 2nd Open NIPA Mallow 5 Bird.

The members of the Kingswood HPS in Belfast along with Charlie the lorry driver for the NIPA, just after loading the crates on Thursday night for Bude.

Rosemary and Martin Mulholland holding their 1st Millvale Club, 2nd North South Federation, and possibly 2nd Open from Bude. Bred last year from Luc Geerinck x Soontjens stock birds, she was raced roundabout.

The top winners in the Dundonald 3 Bird Challenge from (l) Rowan Doonan, Wayne Doonan 1st Open plus £2,500, Gerald Delany winner Bricon ETS, Ian Gibb sponsor plus 2nd Open and £1,000, Brian Foulis the main organiser and Tommy Mooney winner 3rd Open plus £500.

Fanciers from the Coalisland HPS at Henry McLaughlin's home as usual on Sunday morning now known as (The Breakfast Club). What laughter I had here just what the sport is all about, great banter all morning.

Bertie Robinson of the Horseshoe HPS in Larne has won 3 x 1sts with his good Soontjen cock, his latest success was from Bude doing velocity 1196.

Karl Murphy of the Coalisland HPS had a super weekend topping the Cookstown Social and Coalisland HPS from Mallow and looking good for 1st Section A. He will also I think finish 2nd Section A from Bude, a super weekend.

G & M Irvine had the all pool winner in the Carrick Social from Bude, the same bird won 1st Club Talbenny (2) the bird for Gerald and Fiona was sent sitting eggs.

Kenny Galloway and son Kai from the Crumlin & Dist HPS admire the winner of the NIPA Sect B from Mallow.
The Doagh & Dist Young Guns Anthony and Norman Lewis with clubmates Robert Wilson and Thomas Elliott. The boys must be looking forward to St Malo.

Much of this years racing all bar maybe one race has been superb to say the least with many fanciers enjoying very few empty perches. Last weekend was no different with many telling me that the Bude race was one of the most successful in recent years. Which is a good thing as the list of races just seems to be endless, we seem to be no sooner finished one until the fanciers are basketing for another. Last weekend the NIPA enjoyed excellent races from both Bude and Mallow and on going to press the over-all Open winners seem to be McKinstry Brothers in the Mallow Five Bird and the formidable Donnelly Bros of Newry from the Bude event. Although as always these are provisional assessments until all checks are completed. I set about making a point of calling with both winners on Sunday evening, not a normal move but having been sat at the computer since early morning sometimes a break can be a good thing, as when you start to make continuous mistakes when typing it is an indication that its time for a break, so first stop was the picturesque town of Rathfriland which has stunning views of the Mourne Mountains on its approach. Here I was to visit Albert McKinstry who racing with his brother Stanley make up the Dromara Open winning partnership of McKinstry Brothers. Albert is making huge steps in over coming throat cancer and this will no doubt be a pleasant lift in what has been some difficult months for the family. Albert timed the partnerships winning pigeon at 11.31am after being released in Mallow at 8.00am in a North Westerly wind, the loft is measured 179 miles from the race point. The Blue two year old Widowhood cock finished 2nd Club last week with the NIPA from Fermoy and based upon this the partners had him pooled to £2 in the Section and Open. Sire of the winning pigeon is the brothers old Van de Weyer bloodlines purchased years ago from Derek Mitchem when mated to a Cooremans hen purchased from Colin Gibson who is no stranger in supplying top stock to many fanciers around the country, well done to the McKinstry Brothers of Rathriland on their Mallow 5 Bird Open success, a race that many say is a true and fair balanced race to be judged on as all fanciers are on a level playing field.

Finishing 2nd Open in the Five Bird Mallow race is a very well known fancier just not here but also in England Mr Ron McKelvey, a very good fancier who has appeared in many pigeon related videos over the years. Ron races to a 80 foot loft over looking the main Newry to Dundalk Dual Carriage Way and what a loft it is, called with Ron also on Sunday evening to see his wonderful set up and while enjoying a welcomed cuppa was able to see the end of the Turkey match that will be remembered as one of the most incredible comebacks of all time 2 - 0 down with 15 minutes to go. Ron was telling me he finished 3rd open in this same race last year so who knows might be in the making of 1st Open next year, you can be assured everything and anything is possible with this fine fancier. The 2nd Open pigeon is a class article of Braspenning Breeding, (there is probably no better family of these birds in Ireland). The 3 year old Cheq Widowhood cock has already won 8 x 1st’s and was re-mated up again on Thursday before being basketed the following day. He is a G/Son of the Famous “Kleine Lichti” which was one of the first pigeons bought from Bert Braspenning by Louella Pigeon World. Ron has direct children from the best that Louella owned with regards this strain and boy have they done him proud over the years, well done Ron.

A small drive down the Carriageway took me to the loft that finished 3rd Open and a partnership that needs no introductions to the fancy Donnelly Bros of Newry City. I was actually calling for a bigger purpose and that was to get info about the pigeon that they had clocked in the Bude race that looks very much like the Open winner. Thanks to Rosemary Mulholland of Bessbrook who informed me that the Donnelly Brothers had recorded a velocity of 1301ypm from Bude just 4 yards in front of herself. On approaching the house I could see John Donnelly locking the large farm that the brothers run up for the night, so made a quick dash to catch up with him at late notice, John of the two brothers is the one that normally likes to stay in the back ground but with Richard not around it was his turn to take centre stage, the brothers clocked their yearling Widowhood Cheq cock at 1.02pm flying 246 miles from Bude back to the loft just on the outskirts of Newry City, the sire of the winning pigeon is “Wesley” winner of 1st Open Mallow Five Bird when mated to a full sister of the partnerships Talbenny Derby winner. John was telling me that this pigeon is lucky to be alive having been run over by a car while picking around the front of the loft, that day they lost what they considered to be the best yearling pigeon they owned (wouldn’t have liked to have been the driver) this weeks open winner had a number of flights pulled out and was for a week or two walking with a dropped wing hence missing the first four weeks of the O/Bird programme, excellent work by the brothers to have this pigeon back to its best and looks likely to have added yet another Open success to the already lengthy racing C.V. of the mighty Donnelly Brothers. The R & M Mulholland partnership will I think finish 2nd Open just four yards behind Richard and John, Rosemary was telling me that it was a Soontjen Yearling Blue Hen they clocked at 1.03pm flying 245 miles racing on the roundabout system this hen topped the Club by some 70 yards a great performance.

Other news this week for Adie included assisting Homer as usual in gathering up all the info from the Top 10 finishers in the INFC Yearling National which was flown on Thursday from Sennen Cove, these are detailed in a separate report. Also had an e-mail from Len McKinstry of Dundonald with the final detail surrounding the winners of the Dundonald 3 Bird Challenge that was flown in conjunction with the INFC Skibbereen National. The winning pigeons and fanciers are as follows:- 1st Doonan & McGuinness Dromore - Blue Cock 06-GB-X-58930 the partnership won £2,500 plus the beautiful Glass Trophy Sponsored by Gibb & Byrne the winning Vel 1324.3.  2nd Open Ian Gibb & Sons of the Derriaghy HPS - Blue W/F Cock 07-GB-D-16010 Vel 1278. 9, Ian and Peter pick up a cheque for the sum of £1,000. 3rd and final place T Mooney & Son Millvale - Blue Cock GB 05-A-43035 Vel 1265.6, Tommy will pick up a nice sum of £500. Then we had a Bricon ETS system sponsored by Adie McCormick of Bricon Ireland to which the Dundonald members appreciated greatly the winner was the master stock man himself Mr Gerald Delaney. The awards for the above event are going to be presented at the www.pigeonnetwork.com Quiz Night of the Year on the 24th of October at Ballyclare Comrades Football Club, yet just one more element of what promises to be a very enjoyable evening. Also should the organizers decide to run a Y/Bird event of the same substance, Pigeonnetwork.com have agreed to sponsor the trophy for this event.

Eamon Quigley continues to have a fantastic cross channel season clocking a gift bird from well known Dunloy fancier Danny Dixon to take 2nd Fed, with his other entry taking 7th. What a weekend for Karl Murphy probable 1st Section winner here and this Blue Soontjen/Hartog Yearling hen will also top the Cookstown Social club, she was timed at 12.06pm flying 189 miles into Coalisland. I caught up with the Coalisland boys at Henry McLaughlins house on Sunday morning for the “Breakfast Club” Henry’s wife Shiobhan I am assured cooks a marvellous Fry-Up I would loved to have stayed but due to the pressures that a Sunday beholds with this work, its not long before 1 hours rolls into 2 etc, but many thanks for the offer and the craic was superb, a great example of what the sport of pigeon racing is all about. Well done to Karl on a tremendous performance over the weekend taking nothing also away from fellow club mate Micky McPhillips who topped the Club and Section I do believe from Bude, remembering Micky McPhillips already has an NIPA Open under his belt in this O/B campaign so far this season.
