Rosscarberry OB Inland National - On Sat 17th May conditions in Rosscarbery were not favourable for a liberation and the convoyer who has the final say on whether or not to release the birds decided not to liberate. On Sun 18th conditions at Rosscarbery were quite good but unfortunately conditions in the Galtees were very poor with rain, poor visibility, and very cold and again a liberation was not possible. Monday 19th conditions were perfect and the birds were liberated at 9.15am in a South Easterly wind and it would by all reports appear to have been a good race. Congratulations to all the winners. Those who are saying that the birds should have been liberated on Saturday or on Sunday do not have the full picture, and would not appear to have the interest of the pigeons at heart.

The pigeons were not held on Saturday because of drug testing or wing stamping, there were no pigeons drug tested. One Nat Centre was completely wing stamped in Dromore on Thursday evening before the birds left for Rosscarbery. I hope this dispels any rumours that are circulating within the pigeon fraternity and I would like to thank everyone for bearing with us during a very difficult weekend. The convoyer should be thanked for the condition in which the pigeons returned to their respective lofts, also the race controller and everyone who helped in any way.

Weather forecast for this incoming weekend looks satisfactory for the Saturday liberation from Pilmore Beach. Please remember collection times are one hour earlier than usual. Fred Russell NIPA Secretary.

PS. With a Bank Holiday weekend all results should be posted ASAP, to assist with an early result publication. Homer.

Following Sunday races in successive weeks from Pilmore Beach and Clonmel the NIPA ran into further problems last weekend when the birds were in Rosscarbery County Cork for the Inland Old Bird National. The birds had been race marked as planned on the Thursday for release on Saturday. Despite the fact the other four Irish Organisations managed a Saturday release at their respective points the NIPA decided to wait for better conditions. Sunday was not as good as was expected, and yet again a release, or a move, was not possible. Latest news on Monday morning, early, was that a liberation is expected, between 9.00 and 10.00am and hopefully after the delay the race and returns merit the decision to hold, especially on Saturday. Just for the record on Saturday East Down Combine released in Skibbereen for the OB Classic, Ulster Fed in Fermoy County Cork at 11.15am, Irish SR Federation in Tramore at 8.45am and the Dublin East Coast Fed in Rosscarbery at 1.15pm.

The NIPA birds did go at 9.15am Monday 19th May in a helping South East wind and early reports indicate a very good race and good returns as well with the majority of birds home. The debate will probably continue but the good result will cheer up the fancy no end, I have noticed that a number of lofts to the fore the week previous returned again with top results, that over the whole country. The overall winner is Davy Hutchinson of Ashfield who wins the race for the second time for the high flying Hutchinson Bros. Watch out for the Loft Feature by Adie, scribe for the local area.

Looking ahead to next Monday 26th May the Irish Nat FC will race mark in Lisburn between 3.00pm and 7.00pm for the season’s first big race for the INFC, the Skibbereen OB Inland National. Weather permitting it will be flown on Wednesday 28th May, another big entry is expected in a race that is gathering additional support each year. This weekend 24th May the NIPA are back at Pilmore Beach and remember collections are one hour earlier.

HUTCHINSON BROS of Ashfield win the Rosscarbery Inland National

Finally the first of the National events for Northern Ireland fanciers took place yesterday with the NIPA Rosscarbery Inland O/B National convoy being released at 9.15am in a South Easterly wind. The weather for the day ahead looked very good and at times the Southerly wind was somewhat blustery, which had many fanciers estimating that the pigeons would be around the 4 hour mark in around the Section D area. Not a bad guess for the winner of the 2008 O/B Inland National is Hutchinson Brothers of Ashfield. Davy timed his Blue Yearling Widowhood hen at 1.30pm flying 4 hours and 15mins to her loft sited at the Upper Quilly Road on the outskirts of Dromore. This brave wee hen topped the Club the week previous from Pilmore Beach finishing 16th Section G with 2,889 birds competing and over-all 60th in the NIPA Open with just over 27,000 pigeons sent. Not surprising to find that she is of Soontjen breeding with Davy Hutchinson probably owning the cream of the Mardon Van Reet pigeons in this country currently, from 1991 onwards Davy and wife Annette were regular visitors to the home of Tony and Ann Mardon with many pigeons purchased during that time, in fact 99% of the Hutchinson stock loft is based on the Mardon Soontjens. Davy has enjoyed great levels of success with these pigeons and has been top prize winner in the Ashfield Club ever since he first raced siblings from the initial Soontjen pigeons brought in. The winning hen is bred from Davy’s INFC Yearling National winner of 2006 when mated back to its Grandmother. The loft previously won this same race in 1996 when it was then regarded as a Derby event. In total Davy Hutchinson has now amassed a total of 27 x 1st Section Diploma’s topped the NIPA Open from Kildare, Nenagh, Tramore and Rosscarbery twice. As well as winning the INFC Yearling National in 2006. Only last year Davy was to be piped to the NIPA Open two weeks on the trot on a decimal point from the Mallow 5 Bird and Sennen Cove races respectively. So I think you would all agree a very worthy winner indeed of the NIPA O/B Inland National.  Congratulations also to the convoyers who did a marvellous job with the pigeons having been in the crates for four nights, with returns very good many have commented on the excellent order of the pigeons, very well done boys.

OPEN INVITATION

Went down to Edgarstown last Wednesday evening to see the clocks being run off for the newly formed Fanciers Combine, I have to say for a very new organisation they are certainly pulling in fantastic numbers birdage wise, over 2,000 away last week, remembering they are only currently servicing the Section E area of the NIPA, further expansion is planned for the future. No need to wait though for every fancier will have their chance to compete against each other come the 31st of May from Pilmore Beach ring marking will be as usual 6.30pm - 9.30pm at the Edgarstown Club Rooms on Friday 30th of May. Yes this race is OPEN to every fancier who races in Northern Ireland regardless of what organisation your affiliated to. The competing birds are priced at £2 each with trainers costing 50pence each not bad for all you National wanting a preparation toss from Pilmore Beach for 50pence a pigeon remembering that the NIPA are in Talbenny that weekend and have decided that their won‘t be a come back race on the same day, so here‘s your chance if its up Ireland racing or tossing your after. Main Sponsors of the race are Edwin May - Volkswagon Auto Sales (J McCullough) also local fancier Matt Murphy who owns Murphy Building Contracts & Developments has put up a £400 prize for the Best 2 Bird Average and not forgetting that all the donors and buyers at the various fund raising sales held last Autumn are eligible to enter with £1,000 of prize money already set aside as advertised at the time. I recall going to one of those very successful sales last year with many very good birds on offer and equally many good fanciers buying them. For further details contact either Joe Brown on 07709077266, Gerald Creeney on 38851405 or Geoffry Douglas on 38327685.

SUCCESS FOR WEST BELFAST LOFT

For the fifth race the Ulster Federation moved on to Fermoy in County Cork some 195 miles into Belfast, liberated on a Saturday at last, 17th May. The strings were finally cut at 11.15am released in a Lt NE wind and a steady race was expected. Just ten yards separates the leading birds in the Provisional Top 10, 1st Open won by the high flying West Belfast HPS partnership of Jackie Lindores Son & Nicolson recording velocity1347. The lads are no strangers to the top spot having topped the Ulster Fed twice last season with their Champion Duffield’s Pride. Super result again lads and many congratulations. Runner-up were near neighbours from the Shankill & District, Smyth & Townsley were just a yard behind doing velocity 1346. We pop down the road to the big Grosvenor HPS over 700 birds competing and 1st Club and 3rd Open won by J Maguire doing 1345. James was having a quiet season to date, and hopefully this is the kick-start for him. Its over to the plots in the Shankill 4th Open won by Frankie Robinson & Son of West Belfast on 1345 followed a yard further back by the ever consistent Rab Fear of the South Belfast. Paul and Kathleen McCarthy of Grosvenor are 6th Open (still hanging in there Paul) followed on the same yard 1343 by S & J Williamson & Son of West Belfast. J & D Braniff win 1st Wheatfield for 8th Open followed by Joe & Linda Smyth of Grosvenor, Big McC must be giving you a few tips, and clubmates A & A Ferran take 10th. Looking down the rest of the clubs I see Legs McCullough tops the Fortfield lifting the long running DTW. The place was like the morgue with all the long faces, especially Kevi Dee. Jackie Scates has 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Sydenham and what a result in Andersonstown with 1st Club won by V Cooney & Son. Speaking to Vinty on Friday he was going down to see Prof Elliott on how to use the hemp, it worked! Great result in the Glen Inv for a super guy Pat Copeland, well done Pat and big Jimmy McGann is at it again with 1st, 2nd and 3rd Britannia – Billy Clinton is ready for a nervous breakdown. Thanks again to PO Joe Flood, any news snips or photos pass them on. Tel: (028) 90 225999 or Fax: (028) 90 200848.
