Area Lib (1) - 21/07/18

Postby willie reynolds » Sun Jul 22, 2018 10:03 am

For the start of the young bird season the NIPA as usual had a series of Area Liberations, by all accounts it was a far from perfect start and a lot of birds missing. Birds were released in Navan, Mullingar and Tullamore on Saturday 21st A large number of members were not ready for the opening race, it’s the same every season, maybe this time they were lucky. A lot of complaints about the possibility of clashing hence the reason we were looking for just a top and bottom divide for one Area Lib each. At the weekend we had 10 separate liberations for Northern Ireland birds, is that part of the problem?

Obituary -

Over the holiday period we had the sad news that Jackie Millar from Cromkill had passed away suddenly at Antrim Area Hospital, he had health problems over the last year. J Millar & Son were long time members in the Harryville HPS and also had a spell racing in Kells & District. Over the years they won many positions and usually timed winners up to and including Penzance which was probably the lofts favourite point. Jackie was a dedicated worker in the club over the many years of membership, and a dedicated member of Mid Antrim Combine. Sincere condolences to his son Derek, who is a member of the partnership, and his other children Rodney and Elaine, and the wider family circle. There was a large attendance at the funeral to Ballee New Cemetery last Friday and donations in lieu of flowers if desired should be made payable to Chest Heart & Stroke Association c/o Alan Francey Funeral Services, 94 Toome Road, Ballymena. BT42 2BU.

Around Antrim the best bird was timed in Randalstown for the top partnership of Stewart Bros recording velocity 1188, on the same yard C & D Jackson won 1st Kells & District. Their winner was timed at 12.12 hrs flying just short of 100 miles

City of Derry Combine - Overall Old Bird averages result

Congratulations to Paul Maxwell of the Foyle RPS on being crowned the overall winner of the 5 local clubs combine/fed. The Foyle Hill lofts were on top form in the last 5 weeks of the old bird programme, clocking up numerous positions within the Top 20 result and gaining a clear lead on the points. Going into the last few weeks he was near untouchable. There has not been much of an update on the result after the second week but at this point I must congratulate Concannon Bros of the Maiden City on their win from Penzance and John McLaughlin from Amelia Earhart with his super wee bird who won a very tough St Malo OB Nat from France.

The overall points for the Top 20 where: Paul Maxwell Foyle 350, Leo Flanagan Londonderry 292, J & G Ramsey Derry & District 268, Anthony McCrudden Derry & District 181, M Rabbett Amelia Earhart 146, Billy Houston Londonderry 111, John McLaughlin Amelia Earhart 105, Rory Gallagher Derry & District 103, Sean Malone Foyle 101, Concannon Bros Maiden City 92, R & G Martin Maiden City 86, Eamonn Quigley Amelia Earhart 77, William McCloskey Amelia Earhart 75, Billy Page Foyle 75, Cooley Bros Derry & District 62, P & M Healy Maiden City 61, Lexi McCloskey Amelia Earhart 57, Mickey Jones Derry & District 52, M Fahy Derry & District 50, Danny Canning Derry & District 49.

The Top 3 in each local club are as follows:
Foyle Rps - Paul Maxwell, Sean Malone, Billy Page
Londonderry - Leo Flanagan, Billy Houston, Bob Freeman
Amelia - M Rabbett, John McLaughlin, Eamon Quigley
Derry & District - J & G Ramsey, Anthony McCrudden, Rory Gallagher
Maiden City - Concannon Bros, R & G Martin, P & M Healy

Averages for the young birds will commence starting the first Mass Liberation.

For the weekend of the NIPA 2nd Area Liberations and poor weather forecast for Saturday, it was decided to delay collections until Saturday for a possible liberation on Sunday. We had a month worth of rain during Saturday afternoon and with many roads flooded and in the interests of safety, collections and the proposed races were cancelled. Its better safe than sorry and the loss of a racing weekend will soon be forgotten, in the meantime a meeting of NIPA Committee has been arranged and this will sort out the way forward. The prizemoney for all old bird Nationals and Classics etc. is now ready and can be picked up in the office if you require it otherwise we will endeavour to send it out on transporters over the next week or so but would be more advisable if you could pick it up.

Humbled to have Marie Curie here this morning to be presented with some well deserved funds for the fantastic work they do. Many thanks to Phil Kane from Marie Curie, Samuel Briggs from the Irish National Flying Club and to all those involved in donating money for such a great cause.
