With Cloughmartin site not available the NIPA returned to Mount St Joseph Abbey in Roscrea for the third race of the inland programme. Liberation on Saturday 3rd May was at 10.00am in a Lt NW wind which was much stronger at the top end. It turned out a good enough race and most birds made home lofts. Matthew Russell from Dromara topped the Mighty NIPA with just over 23,200 birds competing with velocity 1404 just ahead f Davy Calvin from Bondhill Social and top lofts from last season Owen Markey and J & D Braniff.

Steady Race From Roscrea
The third race of the new season was again from Roscrea in County Tipperary. Birds were liberated on Saturday 3rd May at 10.00am in light north westerly winds variable en route. Best bird timed this week was to George Eagleson who timed his yearling blue hen at 13.23pm to the Grove Road in Ballymena to win 2nd club Cullybackey and 1st Mid Antrim Combine on 1278ypm. Breeding is Bobby Coyle of Coleraine.
Next best in the Combine with two good birds was young Joshua Whyte of Ahoghill who finished 1st & 2nd Ahoghill, 2nd & 3rd Combine and 14th & 15th Section on 1273 & 1272. Joshua timed the same pigeon that won 1st club and 1st Mid Antrim Combine last weekend from 1st Roscrea. The 2yo cheq hen was a gift from clubmates Paddy & William McManus and is a granddaughter of their Vanderwegen 'Bad Handler Cock' a winner of 3 x 1st Mid Antrim Combine, 2 x 1st Section B and 5th Open Nipa Fermoy 5 Bird. This hen won from Roscrea as a young bird for Joshua in 2023 when placed 3rd Combine, 7th Section and 34th Open 16981 birds. The hen has now won 3 x 1st club and 1st, 2nd & 3rd Mid Antrim Combine.
Robin Service and partner Jackie were best in Ballymena & District on 1269 with a yearling blue Soontjen/Frans Zwols hen. She is off 'The Bad Winged Cock' which has bred them four winners now and also two Combine winners and a 1st Section winner. He is a son of their old Soontjen cock mated to the good Frans Zwols hen. Dam is a sister to Davy Jackson’s 'Nee Nee', she's a double Section winner and meritorious award winner. Robin purchased her from Gary Gibson and she was originally bred by Derek Parr off his good Soontjen pair.
Marc Neilly was best in Broughshane on 1264 with a yearling cheq cock. This one's a full brother to last week's winner. The sire Van Mechelen from Paddy & William McManus of Ahoghill and dam from Geoff Dickey. Geoff Surgenor made it a hat trick of wins in Kells with his winning hen doing 1260. Sire is bred from a David Currell cock and the dam is Geoff's good 'Marion' hen that won 1st & 2nd Section and has bred many winners. Two wins on the trot for Jackie Steele in Rasharkin on 1230 with a 2yo black Lambrecht cock. He’s bred off 'The V Cock' a son of '02' when mated to a daughter of '38'. This cock has won before. John Miller had his first win of the season in Randalstown on 1228 with a 3yo mealy cock sitting 15 days. This cock won Dale last season when placed 15th Section. Breeding is Frank Sheader lines.

Matthew Russell with his open winner yesterday. She has now been named 'Murray Mint' as she is a gift bird from clubmate Barry Murray. This hen was raced on the roundabout system.
She has previously scored 3 x 2nd clubs, 3 x 3rd clubs and 2 x 4th clubs. She has also scored 4th, 36th, 39th, 92nd, 104th and 323rd open. A pretty good way for this hen to finally earn her first win by topping the whole NIPA.
